Teen SOYO

Teen SOYO

Saint George Teen SOYO

Commonly referred to as Teen SOYO (Society of Orthodox Youth Organizations), this organization is dedicated to providing a church-based forum to teens attending St. George.  Once every year, the registered members of the group elect four officers: a president, vice president, secretary and treasurer who plan activities for the year, under the supervision of their advisers.  Spiritual guidance and support is given by Fr. Saba. The president of the Organization is a full voting member of the Parish Council. The mission statement of Teen SOYO is the following:

“LIVING THE ORTHODOX FAITH, IN JESUS CHRIST, THROUGH WORSHIP, WITNESS, SERVICE, AND FELLOWSHIP.”

We of the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese or North America, the Diocese of Toledo and the Midwest, and St. George Church, Cicero, IL, all believe that the youth of our church are vital to the continuity of the Faith. As our mission statement states, our activities are based on worship, witness, service, and fellowship the pillars of Teen SOYO.

Statement of Purpose

We believe that the Teen SOYO Movement seeks to integrate each young person fully into the Total life of the Church. SOYO brings its members to a deeper devotion to the Holy Orthodox Church, its faith, canons and worship. Teen SOYO creates and fosters ministries to encourage Members to commit themselves to living the Orthodox Faith daily. The combination of Worship, Witness, Service and Fellowship are the natural expressions of that commitment. We define these expressions as follows:

WORSHIP ‐ Corporate worship is the sacramental expression of and participation in Holy Tradition, and is the indispensable foundation of Teen SOYO at all levels. Upon this foundation is a cultivation of daily personal prayer life and reading of Holy Scripture.

WITNESS ‐ Christ calls us to be His witness in the world. Teen SOYO must enable fellow Members to express their faith for themselves and to others in order to be true witnesses to Christ and the Orthodox Faith.

SERVICE ‐ Christ came not to be served, but to serve. Teen SOYO seeks to emulate Christ in this and honors and glorifies God by loving and serving mankind in the name of Jesus Christ, using our God‐given gifts and talents.

FELLOWSHIP ‐ The Holy Trinity is the perfect model of fellowship; the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit share perfect communion and exist in perfect love as a community. By gathering together in fellowship, and by showing love for one another in Christ, we emulate the life of the Holy Trinity in our daily life.

The ultimate goal of Teen SOYO is to fully integrate each teen into the full life of the Church, to create a safe and nurturing environment for Teenagers to grow in Christ, and to form spiritual and social bonds between each individual so that a profound and life giving relationship with Jesus Christ and His Holy Church can be realized.

Antiochian Woman

Saint George Antiochian Women

No church is ever complete without the tender loving care of its mothers, daughters and sisters. These ladies make up what is known as the Antiochian Women.

The members meet once a month. Their activities range from the Spiritual to the Colorful, and everything in between. An annual pilgrimage to St. Thekla at the Antiochian Village in Pennsylvania highlights their spiritual experience.

On the social scene, Thanksgiving party ranks high on the list along with many other activities. They also regularly visit the elderly, the sick and the disabled from our parishioners. In addition, the Ladies are often called upon, and they graciously accept, to help prepare meals during certain church activities. The Holy Bread that is used for the Eucharist on Sundays is the product of their labor of love.

How do you join? First you take ideals and principles, then you add dedication and hard work, and finally you sprinkle lots of love and affection, and you have yourself the recipe that qualifies you to join the Ladies Guild. It is an elite group, in a standard by itself. Our ladies have earned the expression (from an old Arabic proverb): “Not even paradise is good enough for the feet of our mothers…”

Young Adults Fellowship (YAF)

Mission Statement for the Young Adult Fellowship (YAF)
Living the Orthodox Faith in Christ Through Worship, Witness, Service and Fellowship.

We Believe that the Goal of Orthodox Christian Ministry is the integration of each person fully into the total life of the Church. We believe that Orthodox Christians must commit themselves to living the Orthodox Faith daily. Worship, Witness, Service and Fellowship are natural expressions   of that commitment. We define them as:

Woship – For Orthodox Christians, corporate worship is the sacramental expression of and participation in Holy Tradition, and is the indispensable foundation, we must cultivate a daily personal prayer life and reading of Holy Scripture.

Witness – Christ calls us to be His witness in the world. We must enable our members to express their faith for themselves and to others in order to be true witnesses to Christ and the Orthodox Faith.

Service – Christ came not to be served, but to serve. We need to move our members to do the same. We honor and glorify God by loving and serving mankind in the name of Jesus Christ, using our God-given gifts and talents.

Fellowship – The Holy Trinity is the perfect model of fellowship; the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit share perfect communion and exist in perfect love as a community. By gathering together in fellowship, and by showing love for one another in Christ, we emulate the life of the Holy Trinity.

Our ultimate goal must be to see that our members grow to love Christ and His Church and to pursue a righteous way of life.

Our movement integrates the resources and programs of the parish as well as the member of the organization of the Fellowship of St. John the Divine – programs designed to meet the needs of varying age groups. We will attain these goals by bringing people together, both clergy and lay, married and single, college students and graduates, to serve at all levels and by developing and providing relevant resource materials.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart…In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)
